If you get annoyed or frustrated by adding either 0 or 91 to a mobile phone network that is outside the home network then you need not get bothered again. Many telecom operators have started simplifying dialling of various STD numbers in the country. Moreover, main barriers have been initiated through implementation of full Mobile Number Portability (MNP). Now there is no compulsion for adding 91 or 0 before calling any STD number. Many telecom operators have implemented this rule and the full MNP will come in full force before July. The time limit set for this was 3rd May by the Department of Telecom (DoT). But it was soon extended to July.
Now, the MNP permits its users to change their telecom operator without having any inconvenience of changing their current mobile number to a new one. The full MNP permits people to change their operators across their circles as per their convenience. This was not the case earlier. The Telecom Industry body, COAI, had previously extended the Government’s deadline (May 3) and said that they require more time to make technical changes in the network. Their work involved changing the National Numbering Plan (NNP) that would take near about 2 months. Earlier, the telecom operators could easily differentiate a local and an STD number but now dialling pattern for all the numbers will remain same. The DoT had agreed to all the suggestions made by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) regarding MNP last year itself.
